Proximity Lane

Every other week during the growing season, I drive to Mud Creek Farm in Ontario County to pick up a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share of beautiful organic vegetables grown by Farmer Ruth and her dedicated team.

Each time I go I pass the street sign for Proximity Lane, which is near the farm.

From seed to produce, a farmers’ relationship with the earth and nature is inter-dependent. The season is set. You carefully tend the crops 24/7 and must notice everything about them. Feedback from the plantings is almost immediate.

Too much or not enough sun? Too much or not enough water? Take your eyes off the tender plants and you may not course correct in time. You can do everything right and nature has other plans.

Proximity Lane is close to Mud Creek Farm and it got me thinking…about business.

What are we doing as leaders to help our teams stay in close proximity to the organization’s strategy every day and stay out of the weeds?

Are we helping team members connect how their team goals and objectives are part of a strategy designed to achieve a company vision with weekly work sessions?

What lane are team members working in, their own or supporting and collaborating cross functionally?

Would team members make different choices of how they prioritize and spend their time knowing how their results impact the achievement of the vision?
